Intraductal Therapy of DCIS: A Presurgery Study
We are looking for 30 women newly diagnosed with DCIS, a very early form of breast cancer, to participate in a research study.
Humboldt County is the site of a three-year study administered through the Dr. Susan Love Educational Foundation. The California Breast Cancer Research Program has provided an $850,000 grant that will study the effectiveness of administering a minuscule amount of chemotherapy into the breast via the milk ducts.
Breast cancer develops in the lining of milk ducts, and these study results may lead to duct-administered chemotheraphy medicine to eliminate the cells lining the ducts.
This study will explore the non-surgical treatments with 30 patients. Patients who enroll in this test program will have an MRI of the affected breast. This will be followed by a meeting with Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Love, who will extract a tiny amount of fluid from the affected duct to determine the presence of proteins that indicate cancer. The patient will then receive a tiny amount of chemotherapy medicine in a time-released fatty capsule.
After six weeks, the MRI will be repeated, and the patient will schedule surgery with the surgeon of her choice. Dr. Mahoney and Dr. Love will receive the affected tissue for further study.
Please ask your surgeon or doctor for details or call (707) 476-0690.
